Black History Month: A Conversation with Michael Ashworth of Ashworth's Cookies

How did you start baking?

-

I started baking at an early age as a child. My mom believed everything needed to be made by scratch and refused to make anything from a box. Any opportunity I had, I would take to help my mom bake or cook in the kitchen. I loved the idea of making something from beginning to end. It’s also like a fun science experiment. Each ingredient reacts differently and you get to experiment and explore to see which ingredients react well with one another.

What role did baking play in your upbringing?

-

Baking played a big role in my life. It is a fun hobby and it’s been a nice life skill to know. Baking became a tradition in my house growing up. For birthdays or events we would make homemade cupcakes or cakes, and every Christmas my family and I would bake chocolate chip walnut cookies for Santa, as well as, frosted holiday themed sugar cookies. This always brought our family close together. They are memories I am forever grateful to have.

What was your biggest baking faux pas?

-

Thankfully, I haven’t really had any baking faux pas *Knock on wood*. I can think of a time I was helping my mom bake. Since I was small at the time, I needed a step stool to help me reach the counter tops. I was mixing the cupcake batter and I must have stepped too close to the edge, because the stool slipped from under me and down came me, the mixer, and the bowl of cupcake batter. The bowl of cupcake batter fell on top of my head and was all over me; it was everywhere. I started crying, but my mom started laughing which made me start laughing and we just made more cupcakes.

What is your favorite item to bake?

 -

My favorite item to bake, would have to be……. *drum roll* Cookies!!! They are so versatile, low maintenance, quick, and fun. You can do a lot with cookies.

If you were a pastry what you be and why?

-

If I was a pastry,  I would be a macaron. Macarons are small, petite, fun, and also have a lot of personality. Kind of like me haha.

What would you say your business specializes in?

-

My business specializes in six different types of cookies. They are Oreo, Reese’s, S’mores, Chocolate Chip Walnut, Double Chocolate Chip Walnut, and Oatmeal Raisin. Each cookie weighs 5.5oz and is blended with fine quality ingredients to create a decadent, rich, indulgent, mouthwatering taste that lasts. My cookies are baked to create a perfect colossal, thick, outer crunchy layer that’s filled with a warm, soft, gooey center.
